start home business

Are You Thinking About Starting A Home Business?

One of the principles of wealth building is to create a business that you own that produces passive income. The goal is to go from being a W2 employee working for someone else to being an entrepreneur fully engaged in owning your own business.

Do you have what it takes?

• Do you have the right self-motivation to be an entrepreneur?
• Are you a good decision maker?
• Is your drive strong enough to maintain the stamina it takes to run a business?
• Do you have financial security to take a risk?

Let’s look at two types of business, both requiring a commitment, but at different levels

The MLM or Network Marketing Company

The start up costs and few for a network marketing company are usually less than five hundred dollars. Network marketing companies usually have low minimum monthly volume requirements There is no employees with a network marketing company and you can choose your own hours. In a network marketing company you can leverage the efforts of hundreds or thousands of people to create substantial monthly passive income. In fact, network marketing companies are ideal for part-time work as you transition from your old job to your new business

The Franchise or Business

With a franchise there are start up costs and fees that an be anywhere from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Franchises have on going monthly royalties. Franchises usually require one or more employees and long work weeks. It is a very difficult as an owner to work part-time in a franchise. With a new business, finding a niche market can be challenging. This is not something that can be taught and can only be learned by experience

Both types of opportunities can be very rewarding financially. The key is in understanding yourself, your abilities and the learning curve you face.

Be realistic about the time you can spend in a new endeavor. Know your strengths when it comes to building and leading a team.

Think about your personal business psychology.

• Are you someone who can handle rejection and setbacks?
• Do you work well with other people?
• Are you motivated enough to work alone or do you prefer a team environment?
• Are you prepared to make personal sacrifices in order to succeed?

Be realistic about your expectations and the commitment you can make to a new business. Sit down with family and friends and discuss your ideas. Listen to their feedback without judging. Draft a plan for your 6-month, one year, three year, and five year goals before making any decisions to start. Remember, patience and careful planning are key to your success.

How To Avoid Business Opportunity Scams

There are thousands of business opportunities, network marketing companies, distributorships and franchises available.

So how do you know which ones are legitimate and which are scams?

My last post gave you a quick way to evaluate a network marketing business, so this post is to help you spot bad deals that are not network marketing.

Avoid business opportunities where their focus is on how much money you can make with how little time, work or investment. Those full page ads in magazines showing a guy standing in front of a mansion with an exotic car holding a fistful of hundred dollar bills is a good example. Legitimate businesses don’t make ridiculous claims.

The money making opportunity in those ads is not to actually do the business they are promoting, it’s to sell you their opportunity like the advertiser is doing!.

Also avoid the ads that don’t tell you what the business really is. “Blind” ads get a higher response rate because people cannot rule something out if they don’t know what it is. Many of these ads make money by selling the leads they create to other people selling business opportunities.

Avoid anything where you do not see how you make money and how the company makes money and why they need you.

I once evaluated a vending business for a friend. The company provided the vending machines, provided the product to sell and got the machines placed for you. All you have to do is service the machines.

Sounds like a good deal, right?

Not really. Their promotional literature leaves out a lot of critical info, but I uncovered this one with a common sense test. Why do they need me? Why don’t they just hire an employee to service the machines?

The answer was, that when all the time and costs are considered, I would not make the $50/hour they claimed, I’d end up with more like $6/hour and have to provide my own vehicle and pay for gas.

Now I see why they need me – I would be servicing their machines much cheaper than they could ever do it themselves….

Another example, my sister-in-law got all excited about a mystery shopper opportunity. She loves shopping and this looked like a way to get paid $500 for each review she sent in.

This one was a total scam, they wanted her to send in a cashier’s check for $2,500 to get started. There again, the way the job market is these days, a company could probably get hundreds of people eager to do this for $10/hour.

Make sure you see the logic how everyone benefits because if you don’t, it’s like they say about a poker game – if you don’t know who the sucker at the table is, it’s you!

One Question To Evaluate Any Network Marketing Opportunity

One Question To Evaluate Any Network Marketing Opportunity

Network marketing is the best way for most people way to get an income started so they can have the time, freedom and money to live the life of their dreams.

Most people don’t have or can’t get the funds to start or buy a traditional business or franchise, so network marketing is their only way to have their own business.

That said, how do you know which of the hundreds or thousands of opportunities to choose?

A series of posts on this blog called “12 Steps To Your Dream Life” goes through a series of criteria to help you decide, but before getting into the level of detail listed there, there is one question you can ask yourself first as an initial screening.

It is. . .

“Would you, yourself, buy the product or service being offered, at that price, if there were no business opportunity attached to it?”

Don’t get involved with any company selling a product or service you would not buy yourself. It’s hard enough to build a business, but without having a passion for the product or service being sold, it’s almost impossible. It becomes too easy to quit.

Secondly, ask yourself if you would buy and use the product or service at the price it is being offered at? And, I don’t mean your special price as a distributor, but the “retail” price. If the answer is “no” on price, that means people will only get involved for the opportunity.

It’s a lot easier to build a business offering a product or service if that product or service stands alone as a good value.

You will probably find this question to be an excellent and quick way to evaluate dozens of opportunities. Most of them will probably not make it through that screening.

For those that do, spend the additional time to evaluate the business further with the ten questions in posts 9, 10 & 11 of the “12 Steps To Your Dream Life” series.
